Five numbers tell you almost everything

Indoor air sounds complicated, but the truth is friendlier than the marketing. A small handful of measurements covers the vast majority of what affects how you feel at home. You do not need a lab. You need to know what "good" looks like — and here it is.

Humidity is the one to start with. Keep indoor relative humidity between 40% and 60%. Below that and your eyes, skin, and sinuses dry out; above 70% and you've handed mold the one thing it needs to grow — moisture. This is the single most important number in your home and, conveniently, the cheapest to measure. A basic hygrometer costs about the price of lunch and pays for itself the first time it warns you a bathroom or basement is creeping into mold territory.

PM2.5 — fine particles — is what you feel on a smoky or smoggy day. Aim for under 5 µg/m³; treat anything over 15 as poor. These particles come from cooking, candles, traffic, and wildfire smoke, and they're small enough to reach deep into your lungs. Averages hide the story here: it's the spikes — searing a steak, a smoky afternoon — that matter, and a good HEPA air cleaner flattens most of them.

CO₂ is your ventilation gauge in disguise. Good air sits under 800 ppm; once you pass 1000 ppm a room feels stuffy and you feel foggy — that groggy, can't-concentrate feeling in a closed bedroom or a packed meeting room. CO₂ itself isn't the villain at household levels, but it's an honest proxy: if it's high, fresh air is low, and everything else is building up alongside it.

VOCs are the "new" smell — paint, furniture, flooring, cleaners. A reasonable comfort target is under roughly 250 ppb of total VOCs. Most healthy people shrug off short exposures, but high levels irritate eyes, nose, and throat and can set off sensitivities. The fix isn't a gadget — it's fresh air after you paint, renovate, or bring home something that off-gasses.

Radon is the one you can't sense at all. It's invisible, odorless, and a leading cause of lung cancer, which is exactly why testing matters: the EPA action level is 4 pCi/L, and at or above it, mitigation is recommended. A one-time test kit is cheap, and if your level is high, mitigation systems are proven and genuinely work. Every home deserves at least one test.

Before you buy anything

We take no commissions from gadget makers, so here's the truth most product pages won't tell you: you can spend a lot and learn very little. Spend a little in the right places and you'll learn almost everything.

Cheap all-in-one monitors are for trends, not lab precision

The inexpensive multi-sensor monitors are genuinely useful for watching how a number moves — CO₂ rising as a room fills, PM2.5 spiking when you cook. But their VOC and particle readings are often inaccurate in absolute terms. Read them as directional signals ("this went up, let me open a window"), not as courtroom-grade measurements. If you buy one, buy it to spot patterns.

The best value in the whole category

A $10 hygrometer that reads humidity is, dollar for dollar, the most useful air-quality tool you can own. Humidity is the master dial for mold, dust mites, and comfort, and cheap hygrometers are accurate enough to trust. If you buy exactly one thing, buy this.

You cannot "monitor mold" with a gadget

No consumer device meaningfully measures mold in your home in real time. What actually works is boring and free: keep humidity in range, use your nose for that musty smell, and use your eyes on the usual damp spots. Humidity plus your senses beats any mold gadget on the market.

The honest bottom line

Buy a hygrometer today. Consider a HEPA air cleaner if you cook a lot or live near smoke. Test for radon once. Everything past that is optional — and a "mold detector" gadget is not on the list.

Keep it 40–60%

Run a dehumidifier in damp seasons or basements, use exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen, and fix leaks fast. Humidity control quietly prevents most mold and dust-mite problems before they ever start.

2 · Ventilate

Bring in fresh air

Open windows when outdoor air is clean, run kitchen and bath fans, and don't let CO₂ climb in closed rooms. Fresh air is the cheapest fix for stuffiness, VOCs, and that foggy-headed feeling.

3 · Filter particles

Use HEPA

A portable HEPA air cleaner, sized to the room and run on high when needed, knocks down PM2.5 from cooking, smoke, and dust. Upgrade your HVAC filter to a higher MERV rating too.

4 · Remove sources

Stop it at the start

The cleanest fix is not making the problem: low-VOC paint and cleaners, no indoor smoking, cook with the fan on, and let new furniture off-gas somewhere ventilated first.

What air quality monitor should I buy?

For most homes, start with a $10–20 digital hygrometer that reads humidity and temperature — it measures the single most important number and it's accurate. If you want more, an inexpensive all-in-one monitor is fine for watching trends in PM2.5 and CO₂, but treat its VOC and particle readings as rough directional signals, not lab-grade numbers. Buy for trends, not precision, and don't spend hundreds chasing a reading you won't act on.

What is a safe PM2.5 level?

For fine particles, aim to keep indoor PM2.5 under 5 µg/m³. Readings above 15 µg/m³ are considered poor and worth acting on — usually with better ventilation, a HEPA air cleaner, or removing the source such as smoke or cooking fumes. What humidity prevents mold?

Keep indoor relative humidity between 40% and 60%. Sustained humidity above 70% gives mold the moisture it needs to grow. A cheap hygrometer plus a dehumidifier, exhaust fans, and prompt leak repairs is the most effective mold prevention there is — far more useful than any consumer "mold detector."
